MemorialCare

Design / Code / User Research

One of the largest healthcare systems in California, MemorialCare needed a website to match its integrity and forward-thinking mindset. We began with an ADA-friendly color palette and interactive library. Our next emphasis was placing their photography front and center as often as possible — they had a high-quality image library and we were determined to take advantage of it. The last major branding element was using exaggerated rounded edges to add a layer of approachability.

Another interesting aspect of this site is the "Set My Location" feature. Because MemorialCare has so many different locations, not all of their content applies to all of those locations. We needed to give users the option to set their location to see the appropriate content that applies to said location. They can accomplish this either via the header or on relevant page types (e.g., a Service Line page). This selection is cached and follows them through their browsing experience, even allowing search pages like Find a Provider to be pre-filtered based on the location they selected.

For two years following the website launch we collaborated with MemorialCare via Agile methodology, which entailed meeting with a member of their team ~3 times a week and spending about 8-10 hours per week working on improving the website. This could mean anything from user tests (both qualitative and quantitative), sending out surveys, reviewing heat maps, performing a competitive analysis, redesigning a component or any other front-end work you can think of, adjusting the CMS experience, and more.

With the previous MemorialCare site not particularly functional on mobile devices, building a well-designed mobile experience was a top priority for the MemorialCare team. We were hyper-focused on keeping things clean at smaller breakpoints since there is potentially a lot of content on a given page. And, since MemorialCare is part of a healthcare system, making sure the site was fully AA-level ADA-compliant was a necessity from the beginning.
